There is no single best swing trading scanner, only the best one for how you trade. A scanner built for intraday momentum is poor at end-of-day breakouts; a deep fundamental screener is overkill for a chart trader. This guide sets out what matters, which kind of tool suits which trader, and how the well-known options differ.

Disclosure

This guide is published by SwingTradeScanner, which is one of the options below. We have tried to describe every tool fairly from its public information; check each site for current features and prices.

What to look for

  1. Data timing. End-of-day data is fine for most swing trading; real-time data matters if you trade gaps or intraday entries.
  2. Data quality. Volume rules are meaningless on single-exchange data. Make sure the scanner uses consolidated volume.
  3. Method fit. Can it express your setup? Bases, contractions and volume dry-up are hard to build from simple filters.
  4. Explanation. Does it tell you why a stock matched, or only that it did?
  5. Context. Market breadth, sector strength and fundamentals in the same view save a lot of tab-switching.
  6. Catalysts. For gap trading, knowing the news and filings behind a move is essential.
  7. Price against use. A tool you open for fifteen minutes each morning does not need the most expensive tier.

Which kind of scanner suits which trader

Free, broad screeners

Finviz is the standard here: a large free screener with many filters and market heat maps. Best for traders happy to build their own filters on delayed data. How it compares.

Charting platforms with screeners

TradingView combines a very large charting community with a screener and custom scripts. Best for traders who live in charts and like to code or borrow indicators.

Automated technical analysis and backtesting

TrendSpider automates trendlines and patterns and backtests rules-based strategies without code. Best for systematic traders building their own systems. How it compares.

Real-time intraday scanners

Trade Ideas and similar tools stream alerts as setups form during the session. Best for active intraday and momentum traders who need speed.

Growth-stock screeners

Deepvue and MarketSurge focus on growth stocks with proprietary ratings such as relative strength. Best for CANSLIM-style traders who like to configure detailed screens. How Deepvue compares.

Method-specific scanners

SwingTradeScanner runs a fixed set of published momentum methods — Kullamägi’s breakouts, episodic pivots and parabolics, Minervini’s SEPA, O’Neil’s CANSLIM and sector rotation — scores every result, and attaches catalysts and SEC filings. Best for traders who follow those methods and want the scans done and explained each morning.

A simple way to decide

Many traders combine two: a charting platform they already use, plus a scanner that matches their method.

Try before you commit

Most tools offer a free tier or trial. Run each for a week against your own process and keep the one you actually open every morning. SwingTradeScanner’s daily results page is free to view without an account.
