Funds cannot hide their size. A fund building a position worth hundreds of millions of dollars has to buy over days and weeks, and that buying leaves a footprint in volume long before it is obvious in price. Reading that footprint is how swing traders find stocks that larger buyers are quietly accumulating.

Key takeaway

Look at volume by direction, not in total. Heavy volume on up days and light volume on down days is accumulation; the reverse is distribution, however good the chart looks.

Up-volume versus down-volume

Split a stock's volume over the last 50 sessions into days it closed up and days it closed down. When up-day volume clearly outweighs down-day volume, buyers are more aggressive than sellers. O'Neil's Accumulation/Distribution rating is built on this idea, and SwingTradeScanner's CANSLIM scan reports an Acc/Dis rating for every result.

Accumulation and distribution days

One of each means little. A cluster of distribution days in a few weeks, in a stock or in the index, is a warning that larger holders are leaving.

Pocket pivots

Popularised by Gil Morales and Chris Kacher, a pocket pivot is an up day inside a base whose volume exceeds the highest down-day volume of the previous ten sessions. It marks buyers stepping in before the breakout, often near a rising 10-day or 50-day average.

Volume dry-up

The quiet side matters as much as the loud side. As a base tightens, volume should fall well below average: the stock is held by people who are not selling. That dry-up is the setting for a volatility contraction pattern, and it is why a breakout from a quiet base on a volume surge is such a clean signal.

Volume on the breakout

The breakout day is where institutional demand should show most clearly. Momentum methods typically ask for volume at least 1.5 times the 20- or 50-day average; episodic pivots ask for 3 times or more. A breakout on below-average volume is a move nobody large is backing.
